Special needs cats looking for special homes

I keep saying I'm going to write an article entitled "Things Nobody Told Me About Breeding". There are a lot of things I could say! One of those is that sooner or later - even breeding only one or two litters a year as we do - you will end up with some cats that need an understanding home.

I must preface this by saying that all of these cats will have a permanent home here with us if the right home doesn't come along. However, I'd be delighted to find homes for these cats where they could be the center of attention. But... I will be very picky about finding just the right home for them: they need a special home, with special people who understand feline behavior and are fully aware of the cat's "special needs". I've noted what I consider the "ideal" home for these cats, but as always when dealing with living creatures, there are just no guarantees. Experience has shown me that cats' behavior can change quite a bit when moving from a multi-cat to an only-cat (or fewer-cat) situation, and this change is almost always for the better.

I will insist that these cats be placed within a few hours drive time (or closer) of Austin TX.

If you think you can offer these cats that perfect home, please e-mail me.

Sarcenet Chotis

"Chots" is an extremely handsome black American Curl neuter born on May 16th 1997. He's rather reserved for a Curl. He isn't the least shy or afraid of strangers, but he is a bit aloof. That's not to say that he doesn't enjoy his tickles!

He has a unique look to him because he has one green eye and one brown eye. He wasn't born this way - his left eye began to turn brown a few years ago and is now fully brown. He has been seen by a veterinary opthalmologist and there is no sign of infection, vision loss or any other problem.

Chots' special need stems not from any personality or health problems but rather from the fact that he is a retired stud cat who does still spray around the house on occasion. I suspect that this behavior would stop if he were in any only-cat home (even spays and neuters will often "mark their territory" in a multi-cat environment). He is very amenable to wearing stud pants, but of course can't keep them on all day.

The "Ideal Home" for Chotis:

  • Only cat in the household
  • Quiet home (i.e. no kids, dogs, etc.)
  • Home willing to use stud pants (if still necessary) or accept that he may mark.

Sarcenet Dulcinea (aka "Curly")

Curly is a gorgeous black smoke American Curl spay born on February 11th 2000. This girl was literally born afraid. We have no idea why, but from the time she was 2 days old, she has been very much a "fraidy cat". She's usually fine with me, but is leary of my husband (although she does sometimes let him pet her). She does not like being restrained, so if restraint for medication or any other reason is required, it can be quite a chore. Curly needs a VERY special home, with very patient people who understand it may take her quite a while to come around - and even then she will most probably bolt if strangers stop by.

The "Ideal Home" for Curly:

  • Only cat in the household or placed with a cat she already gets along with
  • VERY quiet home (i.e. no kids, dogs, etc.)
  • VERY patient people willing to work with her and accept that she may often be hiding.
